Computer - Aided Musical Imagination Eduardo

چکیده

Music is generally associated with the artistic expression of emotions, but it is clear that reason plays an important role in music making. For example, the ability to recognise musical patterns and to make structural abstractions and associations requires sophisticated memory mechanisms, involving the conscious manipulation of concepts and subconscious access to intuitive knowledge. One of the finest examples of early rational approaches to music composition appeared in the eleventh century, when Guido d’Arezzo proposed a lookup chart for assigning pitch to the syllables of religious hymns. He also invented the musical stave for systematic notation of music and established the medieval music scales known as the church modes.

Explaining Musical Imagination

Contemporary psychology of music approaches musical imagination in terms of either cognitive system’s specific (voluntary, involuntary or anticipatory) behavior or capacity. Musical imagination-as-behaviour allows us, for example, to consciously experience the phenomenon of “musical earworms” (e.g., Beaman & Williams, 2010). However, we do not have to be conscious of the workings of musical ima...

Unconventional Computation and Teaching: Proposal for MUSIC, a Tone-Based Scripting Language for Accessibility, Computation and Education

This paper provides a proposal for a tone-based programming/scripting language called MUSIC (the name is an acronym for Music-Utilizing Script Input Code). In a MUSIC program input and output consists entirely of musical tones. Computation can be done through musical transformations of notes and melodies. MUSIC can be used for teaching the basics of script-based programming, computer-aided comp...

On Generating Eeg for Controlling Musical Systems

The objective of our research is to develop Brain-Computer Interfacing (BCI) for musical applications. This paper reviews initial work on protocols to generate EEG data associated with musical imagination. The paper presents two experiments (referred to as auditory imagery and musical focusing, respectively). The results strongly suggest that it is possible to design effective protocols to dete...

Classifying music perception and imagination using EEG

This study explored whether we could accurately classify perceived and imagined musical stimuli from EEG data. Successful EEG-based classification of what an individual is imagining could pave the way for novel communication techniques, such as brain-computer interfaces. We recorded EEG with a 64-channel BioSemi system while participants heard or imagined different musical stimuli. Using princi...

A User-Centric Algorithmic Composition System

Inspiration and compositional processes are eclectic and different for each composer. For example, some draw inspiration from literature or nature to inform their musical creativity while others use algorithms and computer programs. This paper introduces a computer-aided algorithmic composition system implemented in OpenMusic. We start the paper with brief background information about algorithm...
